Poker is a card game that may be played by two to fourteen players, in varying forms, with the object of winning a pot of money. A player can call the bet of another, raise it, or concede (fold). The game has a long history and a vast literature, including books on strategy, mathematics, decision making, and the psychology of gambling. It has been called America’s national card game and is played in private homes, card clubs, casinos, and on the Internet.

Players place forced bets, usually an ante and a blind bet, before being dealt cards. The dealer shuffles and then cuts, dealing each player a number of cards according to the rules of the variant being played. After each deal, there is a betting round, and the player with the best hand wins the pot.

The best hands in poker are composed of five cards. The player who has the highest-ranking five-card hand wins the pot. The best hand may be one that is made up of all four suits or one that consists only of the same suit.

When a player has the best possible hand, he or she is said to have the nuts. The term is used for cards of a certain rank, such as pocket 7’s, that are on the flop and turn when he or she has a straight. A player who has the nuts is considered to have a good chance of winning the pot.
