In a world of flashing lights and free cocktails, it’s easy to forget that casinos are built on a bedrock of mathematics designed to slowly bleed their patrons of cash. But, beneath the veneer of glamour and high-octane spirits, casino games are rigged, and mathematically inclined minds have been trying to take them on for years.

Director Martin Scorsese focuses mainly on three main characters in Casino: Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro), Ginger McKenna (Kathleen Turner) and Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci). He also takes on the city of Las Vegas as a whole, showing how it was once run by the mob but is now controlled by huge gambling corporations. Scorsese utilizes a documentary-style format for much of the film, with back-and-forth narration dumps from Ace and Nicky and virtually wall-to-wall music and songs.
