A casino or gambling house is an establishment for certain types of gambling. Casinos are often combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shops, and other tourist attractions. They may also be standalone facilities or houses. In some countries, casinos are operated by government-owned or tribal organizations. In the United States, private entities operate many of the largest casinos.

The games offered in casinos are largely based on chance, with some having an element of skill. Players place bets with chips or cash that represent notional money, with the house taking a commission on some games called the rake or “vig”. Casinos use a variety of psychological tactics to keep players gambling for longer periods of time. These include offering comps such as free food, drinks, rooms, or other perks. Casinos are also known to make their environment highly stimulating with flashing lights and other visual effects that distract players from the fact that they are losing money. They may also play music and sound effects that imply others are winning, further influencing players’ decisions.

Casino features a stellar cast led by Robert De Niro as mob boss Frank Rosenthal and Sharon Stone as the blonde hustler Ginger McKenna. Despite being less overtly sensational than Goodfellas, the film is just as effective at portraying mob culture and the predatory mindset it can bring out in people. In particular, the way Nicky turns into a hound after Ginger is one of the most masterfully built scumbag plotlines ever – it’s truly unnerving.
