Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It is a fast-paced game with continuous betting by the players. Poker was first popularized in America in the 19th century. It was spread widely from there. There are several variations, including draw and stud poker. The original game was probably developed in Asia, but the full 52-card English deck was introduced to the game around 1875.

The goal is to create the highest possible poker hand from your two personal cards and the five community cards on the table. The highest poker hand is a royal flush (Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit) or four of a kind. Other possible hands include a straight, three of a kind or two pair.

The game can be a social gathering, or a competitive game between rival players. In the latter case, a player may opt to bet higher than his opponents, putting him in competition with the last raiser for the right to win the pot. If he declines to do this, he drops out of any side pots and must continue betting into the main pot until a showdown or he folds.
