Poker is a card game played between two or more players. It is a fast-paced game that involves betting and raising a hand in order to win a pot of money or chips. A player can also fold if they have a bad hand. The game was originally based on the 16th-century Spanish game primero, but it took on new elements such as bluffing after French colonists brought it to their settlements in what is now the United States.<\/p>\n
After the cards are dealt, the first round of betting takes place. Depending on the poker variant, there may be one or more betting intervals before the next card is dealt. A player who bets more than the previous bettor is said to raise, while a player who bets less than the last bettor is said to call. After the betting round is over, each player reveals their cards and the highest-ranking poker hand wins the pot. There are rules for how the winnings from each round are shared amongst the players.
